High Eye Pressure: Symptoms, Causes, and How to Reduce It

What is high eye pressure?

High eye pressure refers to high intraocular pressure (IOP), or high pressure inside the eye. High IOP often occurs when aqueous humor does not drain from the eye as efficiently as it should.

Your eyes constantly make a clear fluid called aqueous humor that flows in front of your eye and then drains out. Normally, an equal amount goes in and out. If the fluid doesn’t leave your eye when it should, your IOP increases.

Normal eye pressure is commonly referenced as 10 to 21 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), but 21 mmHg is not an absolute cutoff between normal eyes and glaucoma. Is High Eye Pressure the Same as Glaucoma?

Elevated eye pressure may not sound serious at first, but it’s a major concern, as it increases the risk of developing glaucoma, a leading cause of vision loss. 

Glaucoma is widely known as the “silent thief of sight”. It advances gradually, showing almost no obvious warning signs until significant, permanent eye damage has already set in.

In glaucoma, elevated IOP can harm the optic nerve — the structure that carries visual signals from your eyes to your brain. As the optic nerve sustains increasing damage, peripheral vision starts to fade. Left untreated, the condition may ultimately result in complete vision loss.

For open‑angle glaucoma, sustained high IOP raises disease risk. Vision loss typically begins in your peripheral field and may keep advancing into more severe visual impairment over time.

There is another type of glaucoma, known as closed-angle glaucoma or acute angle-closure glaucoma. In this condition, the intraocular pressure increases very quickly, and the pressure is usually much higher than in open-angle glaucoma.

Certain glaucoma medications work by cutting down how much aqueous humor your eye produces, while others improve fluid outflow. If you are prescribed eye drops, always follow your provider’s dosing instructions carefully. Elevated eye pressure frequently comes with no obvious symptoms, so feeling perfectly well does not mean you can stop treatment without consulting your eye doctor.

Laser Treatment

Laser therapy is another treatment route for suitable candidates. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), for instance, boosts fluid movement through the eye’s drainage network to bring IOP down. Whether this approach fits you depends on your specific glaucoma type and personal clinical profile.

Surgery

Surgical intervention comes into play when medications or laser therapy fail to keep pressure under control, or when there is substantial risk of optic‑nerve injury. Multiple surgical techniques are available; the final choice is guided by the unique state of your eye. A high pressure reading by itself does not mean that surgery is necessary.

Don’t smoke. Smoking is bad for your eyes. Talk to your provider about getting help to quit smoking.

Here are practical steps you can take to safeguard your eye health:

  • Wear quality sunglasses outdoors
  • Put on protective eyewear during work‑related tasks or contact sports
  • Be aware of your family history of eye conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration
  • Give your eyes regular breaks while working on screens
  • Take precautions against eye infections, especially if you wear contact lenses

Tips to reduce the risk of high eye pressure

Is 21 mmHg considered high eye pressure?

Readings above 21 mmHg typically sit outside the standard reference range. Even so, this single number cannot confirm glaucoma. Doctors must also take other eye‑exam results into account.

Can high eye pressure go back to normal?
